Ritual Reconstructed research documentary to be screened at Bucks New University for LGBT History Month
A documentary filmed as part of the year-long research project Ritual Reconstructed, which used the medium of film, performance and storytelling to look at the ways in which Jewish people who identify as LGBTQI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and intersex) engage in religious and community life, will be shown at Buckinghamshire New University on Friday 5 February, from 1-4pm.
The documentary, entitled Ritual Reconstructed: reconfiguring “places” of spirituality & identity, focuses on LGBTQI people of faith and will be followed by a Q&A session with Professor Margaret Greenfields, from the Institute of Diversity Research, Inclusivity, Communities and Society at Bucks New University, and Searle Kochberg, from the University of Portsmouth, who directed the film.
A key point of the project has been examining how being LGBTQI has influenced, shaped or changed Jewish faith rituals and how being Jewish influences LGBTQI rituals such as remembrance of LGBTQI people murdered as a result of hate crimes or who have died of AIDS.
Professor Greenfields said: “This has been an exciting and challenging project which has enabled us to work with communities to present voices which are often silenced in debates around both sexual orientation and belief. We are very pleased to be able to present this cutting-edge documentary to coincide with LGBT History Month 2016 which is themed this year around “Religion, Belief and Philosophy”. Looking to the future and based on the success of this project, we are planning follow-up work in which we hope to engage with LGBT people of faith from a range of communities including Muslims, Christians and Sikhs.”
The Ritual Reconstructed/ Connected Communities project was funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and led by Professor Greenfields. It is a joint venture between Buckinghamshire New University, Liberal Judaism, University of Portsmouth and The Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University.
The screening will take place in Owen Harris Lecture Theatre 1 at the University’s High Wycombe Campus. If you would like to attend, please click here. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ritual-reconstructed-reconfiguring-places-of-spirituality-identity-tickets-20032781589?aff=es2
